I LIKE TO BE HERE:
JACKSON HEIGHTS REVISITED, OR, THIS IS A MANGO
Conceived and directed by Ari Laura Kreith
Playwrights include Jenny Lyn Bader, Melisa Tien, and Joy Tomasko
Theatre 167
at The New Ohio
154 Christopher St.
attended on September 11, 2014
Theatre 167's Jackson Heights Trilogy — collaboratively written by 18 playwrights — featured 37 actors in 93 roles speaking 14 languages ("an epic song of America's most diverse neighborhood"--Theatermania.) In I Like To Be Here, new faces encounter returning characters and re-imagined scenes from the Trilogy, all the span of one very late night . An elderly Irish woman fights to keep her home. A Bangaladeshi cab driver working the night shift yearns for a woman who rises at dawn to bake bread but does not speak her language. A closeted Long Island cop comes into town for a date, and a dosa chef inadvertently heals a customer's heart. Drag queens, car dispatchers, underslept parents, gamblers, insomniacs, and dreamers find one another on the streets of Jackson Heights.

New York, NY

Presided over by the Hindu god Ganesh, a pair of teenagers become unexpected heroes, an immigrant accountant struggles with visibility, and two stifled romantics begin to stumble toward each other during one strangely warm winter in Central Harlem. When January Feels Like Summer follows five colliding lives as a feeling of change hums in the air and the many flavors of desire saturate the streets and subways and bodegas of the city. These characters learn to do more than meet their obstacles head-on -- they discover how to transcend them.
